Drinking Age

LOWER THE DRINKING AGE! I do not believe this just because I am an 18 year old college student. At the age of 18 you able to do many others things that you could not do before, why can’t consume alcohol be one of them? When you turn 18 you can buy cigarettes which are just as harmful to your body as alcohol. Yes, both of these are addictive but it is much easier to become addicted to cigarettes. There are multiple reasons I think the age should be lowered. When high school students get to their college what is the first thing they do? They go out and drink with there newly met friends regardless of their age. It is illegal but it is still done. The worse part is students that are just starting to drink do not know how to. They go out and consume as much as they can because they do not know when they have had enough. If the age is lowered to 18 they will have time before going in to college to start drinking and learn the limits. This could save lives, there are people that die from alcohol poisoning because they thought they could keep drinking. After you throw up your first time you know exactly how much you can handle.
I understand the argument against lower the age because of drunk drivers. I don’t agree with this at all because even people who are 21 drive under the influence. There is no 100% positive way to stop drunk driving. The thing that doesn’t make sense to me at all is the fact that we as citizens can enroll in our military and die for our country, but yet we can not go downtown and enjoy a beer or two. What kind of sense does that make? None if you ask me, three out of every four students (75%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school. This is a statistic from a survey in 2005. So after reading this I will ask you. Are you for or against lowering the drinking age?

  1. Very interesting to hear this. You say that by lowering the drinking age students would learn how to limit themselves, but what about if they become addicted to alcohol like addicted to cigarretes? You are right when you say that they do it anyways before they are 21 or even if they are under 18 in HS. Good job.

  2. I think we should lower the drinking age. I mean, you will have people addicted to it, it's just inevitable, but it will not be the majority. Think about countries with 18 as their drinking age, like Ireland. When I went to Ireland there were people my age at the pubs drinking. They were not drunk or wild in any way. I think the "no" factor is what leads people to believe so many more alcoholics would come from this. Kids get drunk because they know it's illegal.

  3. I am definitely for lowering the drinking age.. I actually know that alcohol or beer can help lower your cholesterol haha if it's not consumed in excess. So technically, it's not as bad for you as smoking :).. And I do think it's ridiculous that we are considered adults, yet we can't do that one adult thing. It's pretty stupid. But I am definitely for the lowering of the drinking age (even though by the time they lower it we'll probably be 21 already, ha).

  5. I believe the addiction thing can occur regardless if you have to be 21 or not. Just like cigarettes if you want alcohol there are ways to get it underage.

  6. i agree. once your 18, you should be able to do anything you would like. but i feel that if they do lower the drinking age, they should higher the age to drive, and teach more about alcohol in high school, so that way the new collage students now how to limit themselves to drinking. that sound like a good idea?

  7. The human brain is not fully developed until the age of 25, so I say forget 18, no rights until the age of 25. No cigarettes… no enlistment possibilities…remain under adult supervision until 25 … how about that? Though I believe these laws are in place solely for capital gain, the fact is that they are also in place for your protection.

  8. if someone who is 18 can make the decision to inlist them to go to war, then why not let an 18 year old person make the decision to drink. i do agree it will be a little shakey at first but people would learn that it is not just something fun to do but a responsiblility
